The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) protects elephants through targeted on-the-ground efforts; its international teams monitor populations, manage protected areas, and conduct anti-poaching patrols. In a 2013 study, WCS found the number of African forest elephants had declined by 65% in just a decade. Savannah elephant populations have also suffered major losses.
Despite unrelenting threats to elephants, WCS works tirelessly to protect important strongholds from poaching. These efforts are seeing measurable results. In Nigeria's Yankari Game Reserve, WCS has reported zero recorded elephant poaching incidents in over two years. In the Republic of Congo's Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, a key elephant habitat, the team helped increase ranger patrol coverage by 85% from 2013 to 2015. During that time, overall poaching rates dropped by a third!

Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is a rescue and rehabilitation center located in Northern Thailand that provides a natural sanctuary for distressed elephants and other animals. In addition to providing a sanctuary to these animals, ENP works to restore the surrounding rainforest and ecological balance among plants and animals by planting trees. About 25 acres of the mountainside will be planted every year for the first five years of this program. The park also hosts visitors, study groups, and more to spend time learning about the plight of local endangered species while also peacefully interacting with the elephants in their habitat.
