Artist Q&A: Josana Blue

Did you know? Each colorful print you see featured on a Sakroots accessory is original, hand-selected artwork created by a circle of fine and graphic artists who share our philosophy of peace and harmony among all things. December's Print of the Month is Gold Songbird, and we're spending some time with the artist, Josana Blue.

What was your inspiration for Songbird?

Songbird was inspired by the Sakroots brand and its happy, free spirited visual language. I thought about the rhythm of the ocean and music as the air, the infinite linear and spatial connection between the heart and music.

What inspires your art in general?

What I am feeling and the desire to create inspires my art. I am inspired by my emotions and imagination, the energy of the city and chill life by the sea, people and of course all of my mediums- paint, fabric, music, dance, fashion. Everything that touches my life really.

Was being an artist your dream? Were you artistic as a child?

I don't know if it was ever a dream but rather an undeniable reality of my being. I think when I was maybe 5 I colored a picture of myself with yellow pigtails holding a paint pallet with a rainbow of colors and a paintbrush. Next to my portrait I wrote, "I am going to be an artist when I grow up."

That was that. I have been creative since the beginning for sure. I have always found great joy in taking what I have to make what I need and what makes me happy. Having a creative challenge is what I live for.

What is your purpose when creating a piece of art?

I just feel like it is what I am supposed to do. When I have an idea or an urge to make something I think the purpose is to do what I want and make the piece happen. I enjoy making things that can inspire thought. I like to create work that can make an impactful contribution to the visual aesthetic in the composition of a space. I like to create work that can enhance a person's mood. The purpose is to invoke energy and be true to who I am as a creator.

When creating your artwork, do you have a process?

I just start. Sometimes I do have a preliminary idea, vision or sketch but I let whatever piece I am working on evolve the way it is supposed to. It's an intuitive abstract formula that I think most artists have‚ you listen to your work and do what it tells you to.

What's something interesting that most people don't know about you?

Hmm, that is tough‚I have a lot of great stories. I don't think that most people know that I was flying planes at 15 years old. That is pretty interesting.

Where else can we see your work now?

I'm excited to announce that I am launching 'Gallery Blue,' my very own Modern Art Gallery in Williamsburg, BK! Opening in January, five days a week,'Gallery Blue' will house my work (of course!) consisting of paintings, sculpture, installation and fashion art but will also be showing select artists and designers. I am also doing a window installation in the East Village at the Modern Love Club. You should be able to check that out on December, 22nd.
